Preferences
The timezone decides "today" for your journal calendar and how timestamps are shown. Following the device is per-device — a phone taken abroad re-dates its own entries without moving your other devices.

Writing defaults
How a new page starts out. Any journal or notebook can override these from the sidebar — tap its pen.
Graph paper has no compact size, so a compact default stays a full page for graph.

Back up to your own Nextcloud over WebDAV. Use a Nextcloud app password (Settings → Security → Devices & sessions), not your login password.
Automatic backups
Run a backup on a schedule (server-side, even when the app is closed).
